WHITEWATER — Maybe it was the change in quarterback, maybe it was the Friday Night lights atmosphere, maybe it was a return to focus.

Regardless, it all worked Friday night before 7,807 fans at Perkins Stadium as UW-Whitewater’s Tyler Vasey took the opening kickoff back 88 yards for a score and the Warhawks never looked back as UW-Whitewater crushed visiting UW-Stevens Point, 66-0, in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup.

Senior Jackson Chryst started at quarterback in place of the inconsistent Jason Ceniti and drove the Warhawks to 45 first half points. Chryst completed 11 of 13 passes for three touchdowns and 266 yards. In total, the Warhawks (4-2 overall, 2-1 WIAC) out gained the Pointers, 619-124.

Not surprisingly, almost every one got into the scoring act. Tamir Thomas and Ty Schultz each ran for a pair of touchdowns, the duo also ran for 130 yards and 123 yards, respectively.

Chryst found three different receivers for scores: 36 yards to Brian Wilterdink, 61 yards to Steven Hein and 7 yards to Drake Martin during a 13-minute span of first-half, game-time where UW-Whitewater grew its lead to 42-0 with 5 minutes, 35 seconds to play in the second quarter.

The Warhawks, who shut out the Pointers 49-0 in 2023, now will face a much stiffer WIAC test playing at UW-Platteville Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. The Pioneers (5-0 overall) are currently ranked No. 6 in the d3football.com football poll.

The Pioneer-Warhawk game is called the George Chryst Memorial Bowl. George, who coached the Pioneers for 14 seasons before passing away in 1992, was the father of Geep Chryst, long-time NFL coach, scout and Jackson’s father, former University of Wisconsin head coach Paul Chyrst and former Mid-American Conference commissioner Rick Chryst.
