MILTON — Milton Area Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Pork Roast and Makers Market will be held on Sunday, August 18 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at North Goodrich Park.

Vendors and community groups will be set up during those hours with demonstrations, hands-on activities and items for sale. Pork dinners will be served from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. or until the pork is sold out. Diners will have a choice of a pulled pork sandwich or two pork chops. A side, cookie and drink are included in the $15 per person meal.

While the Pork Roast has been a staple in Milton for several decades, the event was expanded last year to include the Maker’s Market. Chamber Director Deb Williamson noted that several things are new this year. The Milton Area Youth Center will hold their “Revved Up For Youth” car show. Cars will be lined up alongside Goodrich Park on Janesville Street.

Contact the Center at (608) 201-1169 for more information about registration.

Also new this year is a performance by the Come Back Chorus, a Janesville based men and women’s A Capella group. They will perform at 10 a.m. Local author Jerry Petersen will have information about writing and publishing and Al Lichner of Al’s Chainsaw Carvings will demonstrate his craft.

The Market has a STEAM theme, focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math, which makes the event both educational and hands-on. Blackhawk Technical College sponsors the event and will provide welding demonstrations and hands-on activities. The robotics team from Milton High School will also be present with demonstrations and activities.

A returning event will be the pig-calling contest which will signal the start of the Piggy Bank Auction. Sponsored by First Community Bank of Milton, twenty piggy banks have been painted and decorated by Milton area groups and individuals to be auctioned off during the pork roast. Each bank has a prize tucked inside. Prizes include Scoopie coupons, gift certificates to local businesses and a variety of other items. Williamson hinted that one bank will have a “grand” prize which will be revealed during the event.

The Young Entrepreneurs Corner will also be back with about a dozen participants. This portion of the event is open to students K-12 who will sell their own hand-made items. Each participant had an opportunity to attend a business workshop with Derek Henze of Edward D. Jones and Open Doors Foundation. The workshop was held at the Milton Public Library and covered topics such as choosing your product, pricing and other business start-up basics.

In addition to the pork meal, food and drinks are available throughout the park. The Boy Scouts will have grilled hamburgers, brats and hot dogs, and cotton candy. The Milton High School Girls Swim Team will sell root beer floats and vendors will have coffee drinks, health food items and other treats. Many of the Young Entrepreneurs sell food and drinks as well. Those with allergy concerns will even find safe treats made and sold by one of the young entrepreneurs.

Kids can visit the Milton Public Library booth, make their own derby cars and race them. Mural artist Kegane Rynes, who is helping with a mural for the library’s upcoming Ice Age Trail Alliance’s Trailtessa Workshop will be there working on the project. The mural celebrates butterflies, bees, hummingbirds and other critical pollinators.

Additional vendor offerings include jewelry, woodworking, fabric items, basket weaving, photography and gardening demonstrations.

There is no admission fee to attend the event.
