UPDATE: Police, SWAT presence seen in central Sioux Falls neighborhood
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - On Wednesday afternoon, multiple police and SWAT units were seen in the area of 22nd Street and Spring Avenue in Sioux Falls. According to Public Information Officer Sam Clemens, authorities were serving a warrant from a previous investigation, but it was not a standoff.
First-of-its-kind program offers second chance to Pennington County offenders
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - A program that helps people get a second chance after serving time in jail may also help fill jobs that few seem to want to do, or that they qualify for. The Ignite Program is now offering a work release opportunity to help people get and keep jobs that are otherwise hard to fill.
Governors Host Roosevelt in Boys, Girls Doubleheader
What should be the third game of the season for the Pierre Governor soccer teams, will only be the second as the Roosevelt Roughriders will be in town today to face the Govs. Pierre was scheduled to play Aberdeen Central and Brookings last weekend, but only got Friday’s games in against Aberdeen Central and the Brookings match was postponed. Now the Govs will face Roosevelt in the lone game of the week. Roosevelt played Jefferson last Friday, but last year the Roughriders girls team went 4-7-2 falling in the first round of the playoffs to O’Gorman. Pierre put a hurt on Roosevelt beating them 6-1 in Pierre. The Governors look to start 2-0 which has been the case for the last several years.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) -- We’re tracking showers and storm chances across central and western South Dakota tonight. There will be a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather in western South Dakota where large hail and damaging wind gusts will be main threats tonight. As those storms move east, they’re going to be weakening so we shouldn’t have much of a threat over much of the Dakota News Now coverage area to be concerned with for tonight.

Florida man submits school prayer for possible 2026 ballot question
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The 2024 General Election is only a few months away, but a Florida man is trying to put an initiated measure on the 2026 South Dakota ballot. According to the secretary of state’s office, two topics are listed as potential ballot questions: an initiated measure to require a non-denominational prayer in K-12 public schools and an initiated measure for fair market value assessed property.

Fentanyl overdoses and arrest spark call for action
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - Governor Kristi Noem ordered for flags to be at half-staff Wednesday for Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day. According to the South Dakota Department of Health, there were 219 unintentional and undetermined overdose deaths in the state between 2020 and 2022. In 2023, Pennington County saw 77 fentanyl-related arrests. Last Friday, three more people were arrested for distributing and manufacturing fentanyl and methamphetamine.
“Best of the West” Draws Youth From 18 Counties To Springs
August 11, 2024, marked the 6th annual “Best of the West” county showcase held in Wessington Springs, SD. Thirty-three counties were invited to take part in the event. Eighteen counties paid their entry fee as well as some great sponsors including: Bruns Ranch, L4L Sheep Company, Farmers and Merchants State Bank, Rolling Hills Vet, First Dakota National Bank, Great Plains Farm Mutual Insurance, Dakota Pro Air, Ravine Creek Ranch, Simplot, JP Livestock, NLC Ranch, American Bank & Trust, Vitylle, Fairley Farms, Olsen Yorkshires. All monies were paid back out to the top five in each division in cash and prizes. The planning committee consisted of Kama Bruns, Marty and Mandy Michalek, Garrett Bischoff, Steve Zoss and Jim and Audra Scheel. Sweet Grass Eatery served a delicious concession stand and the barn was packed with spectators. Champions from each county were invited to attend the showcase after winning their local county 4-H shows. Andy Jensen, Sioux Falls, SD, evaluated the rabbits, poultry, and dairy divisions. Tawnie DeJong, Lincoln NE, selected the top five in the large livestock divisions.
