Jelly Roll Honored With Unlikely New Title at Michigan Ceremony: ‘This Is the Real Deal’

Jelly Roll 's journey from convict to country superstar has been a source of inspiration to many, and the latest chapter in his tale of triumph over adversity is just further proof that anything is possible.

During a visit to Michigan's Genesee County Jail on Saturday, July 27, Jelly was sworn in as a Deputy Sheriff with the Community Cares Task Force, as reported by Audacy .

“This is the real deal,” Sheriff Christopher Swanson told the singer after swearing him in. “You walk into any facility now, you can tell them you’re a Deputy Sheriff from Genesee County.”

Jelly was at the jail to cut the ribbon on the facility's Jelly Roll Jailhouse Music Studio, which will be used by inmates.

“From convict to deputy,” said Jelly Roll before he accepted his badge and official Sheriff ID.

Sheriff Swanson has been a long time supporter of Jelly's I.G.N.I.T.E. Program, which helps inmates to earn their GED while incarcerated.

"Now that's second chances," said Swanson as Jelly held up his badge.

As Parade previously reported, the Grammy nominee has visited various jails and juvenile detention centers since becoming a star, both for surprise performances and to "do a little encouraging."

"I always said that if I ever got in this situation, I would do everything I could to give back," he said. "The fact that just me showing up places can make people happy is such a gift, and I feel like if God gave me that gift, I should show up."

Jelly has served time approximately 40 times on an array of drug charges; he was just 14 years old the first time he was arrested.
