Elmira delivered an impressive 10-3 win over the Geneva Red Wings, on Friday. Backed by big performances on both sides of the plate, the Pios took a step towards earning a home playoff game. Paired with Auburn’s loss to Newark, the Pioneers now sit 1 game behind 2nd place in the West Division, with 2 regular season games remaining.

On the field, Elmira opened with a 1st inning RBI-single from Andy Schroeder and a 2nd inning RBI-double from Bennett Shealor. After the Red Wings put up a 1-run 5th, Shealor delivered another RBI-double, and Patrick Ward scored on a wild pitch.

Both teams traded 1-run frames through the 6th, 7th, and 8th, before the Pios piled on more offense. In the 9th, Wellsboro’s Darryn Callahan delivered a base clearing RBI-double to extend Elmira’s lead to 8-3. Calvin Warrilow followed up by bringing Callahan home, before Evan Blanchard tacked on an RBI sac fly.

Corning’s Zack Nelson tossed a season-high 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits, and striking out 3. The standout right-hander also earned his 5th win of the season, tying him for the most in the PGCBL. Schroeder and Tioga’s Erik Berkan closed out the night, allowing 1 run on 3 hits, while striking out 1.

The Pios end the regular season slate with 2 home games. Elmira hosts the Red Wings on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. and Jamestown on Sunday at 4:05 p.m.
