Trump's Rally in the Bronx Looked Very Different Than the Typical MAGA Crowd

Trump's rally reflects his desire to 'win over' Black and Hispanic voters

New York City A wise man once told me "a philosopher tells people what they need to hear; a politician tells people what they want to hear."

Make no mistake about it: Donald Trump is a politician, not a philosopher. And so, I'm surprised that so many are surprised Trump had his sights set on the Bronx Thursday night.

But not just any part of the Bronx... the South Bronx! Yes, the birthplace of hip-hop. As for rapping, what made Trump — of all people — think this primarily minority community wanted to hear his "rap"?

"New Yorkers have something called common sense... and old-fashioned common sense is exactly what I plan to bring back to the White House," Trump told the crowd on Thursday.

At one point, the crowd erupted in chants ranging from "We Love Trump!" to "Four More Years!" Indeed, say what you want about Trump, but at the core he never lets New Yorkers forget: "I'm a New Yorker, too."

At one point, Trump takes to dancing on stage. Literally.

"We are going to make life in New York affordable again," Trump declared. He even mentioned plans to "renovate New York's subway system."

Hate 'em or love 'em, you've got to give Trump credit in this sense: as someone born and raised in NYC, he maintains that hard-to-pin-down "New York State of Mind."

In short, because most psychologists agree that people like people who have the most in common with them, Trump seized the opportunity to remind New Yorkers that he "grew up here, too."
