NYC has a major rat problem, but maybe man's best friend can help

New York City — If New York City is the "Big Apple," that may explain why it's also home to the most rats in America. Rats love apples, after all. In fact, according to a report, NYC is home to more than 3,000,000 rats.

The rats are so prevalent in the city that certain rodents have become legendary.

There's the NYC rat nicknamed “Sisyphus." He went viral with over 2.2 million views on TikTok after being spotted making a futile yet nonstop climb up a descending escalator.

Then, there's the "Pizza Rat." He went viral when filmed carrying around a slice of pizza.

Jokes aside, rats are dangerous to humans! These furry pests do more than steal our food: they carry around diseases and spread them. Hantavirus and Salmonella top the list.

So when news spread a 7-year-old Schnauzer mix has a special appetite for New York City's rats, the dog rightfully received recognition.

Councilmember Chi Ossé recognized "Luna the Dog" for her hard work and dedication to helping NYC win this long-going pest-control problem.

Though friendly like "Clark Kent" by day, Luna turns into "Super Dog" at night. She's been described as "a cold-blooded killer at night with a particular prey: rats."

In short, with news that it's a dog, not a cat, helping the city tackle its war on rats, such a heartwarming story reminds us why — dogs really are "man's best friend."
