NYC decides to pause its 'congestion pricing plan'

New York City — "On second thought..." Though we’re rarely responsible for our first thought, we’re liable for the second one.

On second thought... The City of Dreams has decided maybe it "dreamed" a tad too big. After all, when the congestion pricing plan was initially proposed, some celebrated it as a potential savior for the cash-strapped MTA.

Projected to have been the first toll program of its kind, Governor Hochul said not so fast.

    Why?

According to the report, New York City has bigger fish to fry. Hochul especially showed concerns for the city's post-Covid economy. So far, the recovery efforts have been a tad slower than projected.

Hochul's main concern was how the additional $15 fee — for daytime automobile commuters entering the city — would deter commuters. After all, having to pay just to enter a city to work or visit doesn't sound too thrilling.

In short, despite the MTA board having overwhelmingly voted to approve congestion pricing back in December, the governor and city officials had second thoughts.

The biggest reason for the "pause," according to the governor, is the deep-down fear of "unintended consequences" on hard-working New Yorkers.
