Coyote sightings increase as populations rise across NYC

New York City — When you think of the "City That Never Sleeps," you rarely think of the wild dog that never sleeps... at night.

Coyotes are nocturnal animals that primarily hunt at night. Clearly in the nation's biggest city, "wild" and "hunting" don't go together, especially at night.

According to a report, residents in the Bronx say they've spotted an uptick in coyotes.

Though coyotes resemble dogs from a distance, one hard look at how this predator stalks about will be enough to tell you: "This ain't Rover, my friend."

As for why a city — whose only source of "wild" is primarily its nightlife — would have to concern itself with a wild animal, Keith Lovett, director of animal programs at the Bronx Zoo, gave us the answer.

“The reason people have seen more coyotes in the Bronx is, truthfully..." Lovett said, "their populations are increasing, not only in the Bronx but in several places in NYC.”

Fortunately for New Yorkers, coyotes aren't tigers. In other words, they're not man-eaters.

In short, coyotes try their best to avoid humans. So there's nothing to worry about, unless you're a trashcan on the curb.
