Amazon to invest over $2.2 billion in pay and benefits

"A paid worker is a happy worker," goes the saying. Amazon agrees. Apparently,

Cheers erupted nationwide as Amazon's workforce of over 800,000 received news of a pay raise. That's an increase of $3,000 a year for full-time employees.

Amazon also gave employees something else to cheer about: all hourly employees now get Amazon Prime for free.

“It’s something associates have been asking for for years,” said General Manager Victoria Le.

Amazon's founder, Jeff Bezos, is one of the richest people in history. In the past, Bezos has gone on record and said he plans to give away most of his fortune.

Perhaps there's no better place to start than with the very workers who helped Amazon become the world's top online retailer.

It’s hard to believe that a company as large and profitable as Amazon treats its workers in a way comparable to Chinese factories, especially considering those workers at least get meal breaks. My company, which is nowhere near the size of Amazon, offers better pay and benefits. I’m already making $80,000 a year, working a standard 40-hour week with 10-hour shifts, and still have the rest of the year to go in Arizona. This includes taking two months off all of July and part of September. If a smaller company like mine can provide such competitive compensation, Amazon can certainly do better for its employees.
