Once among America’s top supermarkets, could Kmart's death signal 'the last of a dying breed'?

"I remember the good ole days when we had stores like Woolworths and Sears," my grandma said. "What happened to them?"

Without blinking, my uncle said, "Two words... the internet."

Indeed, during the winter months, it's a lot easier to click an order-now button from the comforts of your home than it is to pace long aisles searching for deals.

Perhaps this explains why Kmart is the latest casualty in supermarkets going extinct.

Once an American retail giant, Kmart will be shutting down its last full-size U.S. store next month.

Kmart was also "doomed by competition with more successful big-box competitors such as Walmart and Target," Chris Isidore writes. But that's only partially true.

Over the past decade, that online-retail giant named "Amazon" has gobbled up so much of the store-buying public's disposable income that traditional stores, like Kmart, are left competing for leftovers.

Even Target has reportedly been experiencing a decline in sales and lower profits.

Perhaps Kmart's final goodbye signals the end of an era.
