GEORGETOWN, S.C.(WCBD)—The 18th-century home is a centerpiece in Georgetown. Now, leaders are working to preserve the historic Kaminski house.

“The Kaminski house is such a focal point for the community. It’s the first stop that I’m all tourists and community members come to us to host lots of community events. We also have a historical museum that people can tour,” said Streater Mitchum, the executive director at the Kaminski house.

The house was built in 1769 and, in the years since, has seen many different owners and countless renovations. The home’s last private owner, Julia Kaminski, gave the house to the city of Georgetown when she passed away in 1972.

Now, more renovations are needed in certain areas of the historic home, which is seeing the effects of time and the Lowcountry climate.

“The windows in particular in that room, as anybody who has a house in the coast knows right if you don’t use them, they rotted and need to be refurbished,” said Jerry Miller, the chairman of the board and president of the Kaminski house.

The renovations could cost around $80,000. Georgetown City Council will discuss the proposal at Thursday night’s meeting, and those who take care of the home are hopeful that its historic value will have some influence on that decision.

“So, the Kaminski house is so much more than a museum, and it’s so important to honor our rich history and share our bright future with future generations, and we really want to put a focus on and a priority on preserving the house so that is around for future generations,” said Mitchum.
