Divided over immigration, U.S. Senate blocks advancing aid for Ukraine, Israel
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate failed to move forward Wednesday with a $111 billion spending package that would have bolstered aid to Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and the Southern border amid deep disagreement about immigration policy. The 49-51 procedural vote, which needed at least 60 senators to advance the bill toward final passage, represents a significant […] The post Divided over immigration, U.S. Senate blocks advancing aid for Ukraine, Israel appeared first on Georgia Recorder.
Border talks stuck as Senate nears vote on package for Israel, Ukraine aid
WASHINGTON — The success of the U.S. Senate in passing a $106 billion global security supplemental aid package hinges on a bipartisan agreement about U.S. border security, but any deal was at an impasse Tuesday. “There will not be a national security bill unless and until there is serious and significant changes in security at […] The post Border talks stuck as Senate nears vote on package for Israel, Ukraine aid appeared first on Georgia Recorder.
Georgia Power gets its way again
Surprise. Surprise. Georgia Power gets its way again. For now. Was I surprised that Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division (EPD) greenlighted the mega-utility’s plan to ignore the dangerous-pollution risk in some of its leaking coal-ash ponds? Are you kidding? Whatever Georgia Power thinks that it needs or wants (I’ll leave rate hikes for another day) is […] The post Georgia Power gets its way again appeared first on Georgia Recorder.
Georgia Power again presses case for customer rate hike to pay for bloated Plant Vogtle expansion
State regulators heard familiar complaints on Monday about Georgia Power customers paying more for electricity after years of being saddled with runaway nuclear expansion costs. Plant Vogtle’s two nuclear reactors took center stage as the Georgia Public Service Commission began a hearing to determine how to divide the project’s expenses among Georgia Power shareholders and […] The post Georgia Power again presses case for customer rate hike to pay for bloated Plant Vogtle expansion appeared first on Georgia Recorder.
Georgia GOP lawmakers advance plan to revamp McBath’s district over Dem objections
Georgia’s new GOP-created Congressional map is teed up for a vote in the Senate after a committee approved it on a party-line vote Monday. From COVID to climate change, Republicans question CDC’s role in keeping public safe
It’s been more than two and a half years since Alabama dropped its mask mandate as part of its COVID-19 safety guidance. But last week, U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R – Alabama) was fixated on whether the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control would reimpose such a requirement. “It’s good that we’re in a different place and […] The post From COVID to climate change, Republicans question CDC’s role in keeping public safe appeared first on Georgia Recorder.
New York Republican George Santos expelled by U.S. House in bipartisan vote
WASHINGTON — New York Republican George Santos on Friday became the sixth lawmaker in history and the first member of the GOP to be expelled from the U.S. House of Representatives. The 311-114 bipartisan vote, which required two-thirds support, followed months of scandal that culminated in a federal criminal indictment and a damning report from the […] The post New York Republican George Santos expelled by U.S. House in bipartisan vote appeared first on Georgia Recorder.
Georgia GOP lawmakers push revised political maps toward passage to meet court’s looming deadline
Georgia Republican lawmakers Thursday advanced through Senate and House committees new legislative district maps after rejecting proposed maps that Democratic legislators contend better comply with a federal court order to create seven new majority Black legislative districts. The pair of House and Senate district maps endorsed by state Republican lawmakers appear to be on the […] The post Georgia GOP lawmakers push revised political maps toward passage to meet court’s looming deadline appeared first on Georgia Recorder.
Democrats, voting rights activists pan Georgia GOP lawmakers’ revised legislative districts
The redrawn legislative maps floated by Georgia Republican leaders have quickly found pushback from Democrats and voting rights advocates as a special redistricting session – the second in two years – gets underway. A proposed state Senate map was released Monday, and a state House map was unveiled Tuesday afternoon, just one day before the […] The post Democrats, voting rights activists pan Georgia GOP lawmakers’ revised legislative districts appeared first on Georgia Recorder.
Bookman: Expect Georgia lawmakers to push school vouchers again with fake sympathy for the poor
Give them an inch, they’ll take a mile. Give them a voucher system, they’ll take your public school system. For several decades now, conservatives have been pushing vouchers by arguing it would help poor students “escape” public schools into supposedly better private schools. Opponents have countered by accusing voucher proponents of using poor students as […] The post Bookman: Expect Georgia lawmakers to push school vouchers again with fake sympathy for the poor appeared first on Georgia Recorder.

The Georgia Recorder is an independent, nonprofit news organization that is focused on connecting public policies to stories of the people and communities affected by them. We bring a fresh perspective to coverage of the state’s biggest issues from our office a few blocks from Georgia’s Gold Dome. Our perch might be near the Capitol in downtown Atlanta, but the communities we care about are found in all corners of Georgia, from the mountains of Blue Ridge to the flatlands of Bainbridge. Just a few years ago, news outlets across Georgia staffed their own capital bureaus and it was common for several reporters to cover the same legislative committee hearings, press conferences on the Capitol steps and other state policy news. Most traditional news organizations now lack the resources to do much more than chase the political outrage of the day. Meanwhile, proposals to shape Georgia’s approach to health care, public schools, community development and other essential ingredients for a good quality-of-life don’t receive the attention they warrant. The Georgia Recorder aims to remedy that. The Recorder is part of States Newsroom, a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit supported by grants and a coalition of donors and readers. The Recorder retains editorial independence.
