It's always a big deal for a mom or dad whenever their child hits a new milestone — but some of these turning points are even more exciting than others. A baby's first steps are probably at the top of the list when it comes to the most thrilling landmark moments for parents and kids alike, which is why there are so many adorable videos of toddlers figuring out how to walk out there!

In a video posted on June 2, one pediatrician mom shares a smart and easy trick for helping little ones learn to walk, and you're definitely going to want to give it a try if your own kid isn't quite mobile yet. All you need to make it happen is a hula hoop (and some patience!).

How Can You Tell If Your Baby Is Getting Ready to Walk?

According to The Bump, most babies start walking between the ages of 9 and 18 months, and there are usually some telltale signs that the milestone moment is around the corner.

One of the main indicators that a baby is almost ready to walk is when they start pulling up themselves up on things.

"Baby can’t start walking until they’ve learned how to get themselves upright. 'Usually, babies are getting ready to walk when they start pulling up on their own — they want to stand,' says Jennifer Shu, MD, FAAP, a pediatrician with Children’s Medical Group in Georgia."

Cruising, which "occurs when baby takes tentative steps while holding onto furniture, like a couch or a sturdy table," is another way that babies practice walking.

"Keep in mind, however, that some babies cruise around holding onto furniture for months, while others start walking practically the moment they get up on two feet."

Increasing confidence usually means that your baby's first real steps are imminent.

"Once baby has gotten the hang of pulling themselves up and feels more confident and steady, they’ll probably start testing the waters of balancing on their own. Not only will they cruise alongside furniture and objects, but they’ll also begin to move from object to object."

Remember that babies also can get fussy and less tolerant as they're approaching a major milestone, and might even go through some sleep disturbances. But with a little patience, you can help them make this monumental leap...and before long, you'll be chasing your tot all over the place!
