Spain scores an own goal at Euro 2024

The Euro Tournament's leading scorer, own goal, struck again Sunday afternoon.

In the first half of Spain's Round of 16 match, defender Robin Le Normand attempted to redirect a Georgian cross into the penalty box but inadvertently sent the ball into his own net.

It's the eighth time a player has scored on his own goal in the tournament.

Georgia, which claimed the stunning 1-0 lead after Le Normand's mistake in the 18th minute, is the lowest seed remaining in what is their debut run at a European Championship.

Brushing off their error, Spain would answer in the 39th minute with an equalizing strike from Rodri, leaving the score 1-1 at halftime.

After taking down Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal 2-0 in their final group stage match, Georgia's underdog story is reminiscent of past shock winners like Denmark in 1992 and Greece in 2004.

If Georgia find a way to complete a historic upset against Spain, they would move on to face host nation Germany in the quarterfinals, which are set to be played July 5-6.
