Brian Kelley opened up about the difference between working as a solo artist and as a duo after Florida Georgia Line ’s split. Kelley built his career as one half of the duo with fellow singer-songwriter Tyler Hubbard until they parted ways in 2022.

“I think we just said we were gonna focus on doing a bunch of everything,” Kelley said of FGL’s breakup during a recent appearance on Southern Living ’s Biscuits & Jam podcast hosted by Editor-in-Chief Sid Evans . “Really at the end of the day, I'm forever grateful for what we created and those memories. And just, man, the fans that we were able to make and connect with I often think about that… just very, very grateful, lot of gratitude on my end for what we accomplished... we kind of did the impossible, you know. I'm not naive to that so I'm just very, very thankful. And, man, I still hear a lot of our songs on radio.

“I mean, to be able to kind of start over as a solo artist but have the background and the history that I have in a duo, it kind of gives me, in a sense, I guess a head start because we've done a lot of things over the years,” Kelley continued during the conversation as he compared singing solo versus in a duo. “But, man, it's so different writing just for yourself. When you're writing for a group or duo, maybe a majority wins or it's easy to collaborate and say, ‘You know, that's dope. If you like it, then I like it. And that works for both of us.’ And I love that. I love being a part of a team. I love collaborating. And on the other end of it, kind of being, you know, your own captain, I think it's a little easier to make it your own. And so, I'm having fun with that.”

Kelley and Hubbard have separately talked about Florida Georgia Line’s split on different occasions. Hubbard spoke about the decision to go solo on an episode of Biscuits & Jam earlier this year . He also appeared on an episode of Bussin’ With The Boys , comparing FGL’s breakup to “a divorce.” Kelley heard that interview and contacted the hosts to record an “emergency” episode with his response .

Kelley released his latest album, Tennessee Truth , in May. The 12-track album includes “Acres,” “How We’re Livin’,” “See You Next Summer,” “Kiss My Boots” and more. Kelley shared his “truth” throughout the conversation with Evans, including his life growing up in Ormond Beach, Florida, why he got benched on the Florida State baseball team, life lessons from the baseball coach at Daytona State College, stories about wife Brittney Kelley and more.
