Food stamps: Here are the states delivering SNAP benefits worth up to $1,751 beginning Aug. 1

This week, 33 states and territories, as well as the District of Columbia, are rolling out their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits to qualifying residents.

SNAP benefits are paid to low- and no-income households who need financial assistance to pay for food. A household qualifies for benefits if the net monthly income is at or below 100% of the federal poverty level, and benefits are typically allotted over a 12-month period. Funds are loaded onto electronic benefit transfer cards and can be used at participating stores such as Walmart and Costco.

According to the Department of Human Services , a family of eight is eligible to receive a maximum of $1,751 worth of SNAP benefits. If there are more than eight people in the family, each person is eligible to receive $219.

While 33 states and territories and Washington, D.C., will pay their recipients on Aug. 1, some residents in these areas won’t see their benefits hit until as late as Aug. 28. Some states will also begin distributing their benefits on a date later than the first of the month.

Each state, district, and territory manages and distributes the benefits differently. Some of them make payments depending on a claimant’s given number, and others pay them out according to the first letter of the claimant’s last name.

Here’s when the District of Columbia and each state and territory can expect to receive SNAP benefits in August:
