Hunting for treasure isn't relegated to faraway lands and panning for gold isn't just for the miners in the historic gold rush during the Wild West. There are dozens of places around America where you can pan for gold or search for precious gemstones, crystals and other stunning souvenirs. In fact, you don't even have to leave Georgia to try your hand at treasure hunting.

Cheapism compiled a list of the 20 "best treasure-hunting spots" across the U.S., places that give visitors the chance to search for treasure and sometimes even keep what they uncover. While many of the destinations on the list feature parks and mines in places like California and the Southwest, one spot in Georgia also made the cut.

According to the site, Graves Mountain, found about 45 miles northwest of Augusta, described as a "mecca for rockhounds" by Explore Georgia . Here's what Cheapism had to say about this treasure-filled gem:

"Graves Mountain is considered to be the most famous rock-collecting site in Georgia, but that doesn't mean you can't find your fair share of treasure. The complex geology of the site has resulted in an abundance of pyrite, sericite, kyanite, quartz crystals, and more waiting to be discovered. Groups interested in treasure hunting will need to reserve the mountain, and while entrance is free, it's generally expected to tip the mountain's caretaker for his time and effort."
