Northern Florida, Southern Georgia, South Carolina into portions of Southeast North Carolina are about to see the heaviest rainfall in many years and quite possible historic rainfall amounts from Hurricane Debby. The hurricane strengthened overnight and is making landfall today along the coast of the Florida Big Bend area near Cedar Key. From here, Debby will be on a slow crawl northeastward and it may take all week for Debby to play out. This sets up for devastaing and potentially catastrophic rainfall in the areas noted above.

Tropical Storm Debby is flooding the Southeast, and it’s barely moving

Tropical Storm Debby, which made landfall on Florida’s Big Bend coast on Monday morning, is expected to bring prolonged downpours and flooding to the area throughout Tuesday. The storm's record-setting rain has killed at least four people in Florida and one in Georgia. Some historic cities are hopeful that their fishing piers will hold up after recent renovations after the past year’s storms.

Tropical Storm Debby slowly moving up the East Coast

STEINHATCHEE, Fla. – Hurricane Debby made landfall early Monday morning along Florida’s Big Bend, blasting the state with flooding rain, damaging winds and life-threatening storm surge. 

The Category 1 storm hit near Steinhatchee about 7 a.m. ET with winds topping 80 mph.

By midweek, the storm is expected to dump extreme amounts of nearly 2 feet of rain on parts of Georgia and South Carolina.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is forecasting “potentially historic rainfall” across southeastern Georgia and South Carolina through Friday, causing widespread flash flooding and life-threatening conditions.

The governors of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina have declared a state of emergency and are urging residents to prepare for the multiple impacts the storm will bring.
