GETTYSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — A Gettysburg dentistry employee is accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars from the business to support her gambling addiction, police said in court documents.

Rebecca Chapman, 57, of Gettysburg, has been charged with felony counts of theft, receiving stolen property, forgery and insurance fraud, online court documents show.

The investigation started after police were dispatched to the dentistry, located at 150 Chambersburg Street, for a reported theft from the business by an employee on Feb. 20.

According to a criminal complaint, Chapman was the administration assistant and her job was to take cash, checks and insurance checks and deposit them into the dentistry’s account at the bank.

Police say there were checks were Chapman forged her name on the back of that were then deposited into her bank account.

Chapman also made a fake insurance claim for a patient and when that patient brought the check in, Chapman took it and deposited it into her account instead of the dentistry’s, police said.

Chapman is accused of stealing around $35,644.12 from Brent Guise Family Dentistry, Gettysburg Borough Police said in a statement. The theft happened “over an extended period of time,” police said.

Police saw through bank records of Chapman’s account there were insurance and personal checks deposited in the account that were made payable to the dentistry office and endorsed by her.

In an interview with police in May, Chapman said “well yeah I took it ain’t that the same,” when asked if she endorsed the checks and allegedly admitted to stealing the money to support her gambling addiction, the complaint says.
