Gibson County inmate complains of unsafe conditions at jail: 'I don't feel safe here'
An inmate is calling for change at the Gibson County Correctional Complex in Trenton, complaining of unsafe living conditions and being denied access to file court documents. In a lawsuit filed in the West Tennessee District on May 10, Thomas Brandon Karnes is seeking $100,000 in mental and emotional damages and $100,000 for the construction of the jail for failure to pass inspection. Milan woman found guilty of attempted voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault
On Tuesday, June 18, 2024, Nicole Cornforth of Milan was found guilty in Gibson County Circuit Court by jury trial of attempted voluntary manslaughter and aggravated assault. Cornforth was indicted on December 4, 2021, for attempted second degree murder and aggravated assault on a Gibson County Sheriff’s Department correctional officer.

Embattled Gibson County Sheriff Paul Thomas is scheduled to be arraigned July 24 on Davidson County charges related to an inmate labor scheme the state said benefitted the sheriff and his businesses. The sheriff was arrested last week in Gibson County on a sealed indictment charging 18 counts of misconduct after officials say he used inmates for personal gain. Authorities in Tennessee indicted Gibson County Sheriff Paul Thomas on 22 charges including official misconduct, theft, forgery, and computer crimes involving jail inmates in his custody. Thomas failed to disclose ownership interests in a staffing agency that provided inmates to assist local businesses, a company that housed current and former inmates in a transitional home, and a third company that provided transportation to work-release inmates and former inmates traveling to and from work.
