Students from Gilbert Elementary School's Kindness and Service Club brought smiles to the faces of seniors at the Gilbert Senior Center recently in downtown Gilbert with a visit filled with conversation and friendship bracelets.
The event, aimed at spreading kindness and fostering connections between generations, saw first through sixth-grade students share lunch and friendship bracelets with seniors at the center.
The visit not only brightened the day of the seniors but also provided the students with valuable lessons about empathy, listening and the importance of community connections.
Following a short walk to the Gilbert Senior Center, students from Gilbert Elementary shared lunch with the seniors, asking about their experiences and listening to their stories.
While in conversation, the students brought out bracelet-making kits and made each senior a friendship bracelet.
When asked about the event, one senior said he thought it was great for the students to eat lunch with them.
Another senior added that he was pleased with the event and that he had never received a friendship bracelet before.
“This is a wonderful way to introduce two generations to each other so that they can come together,” said Brenda Harrison, outreach specialist at the Gilbert Senior Center. “Events like these show that people care, and it gives the seniors a chance to share their experiences and pass down their wisdom with today's youth."
The Kindness and Service Club at Gilbert Elementary is dedicated to instilling kindness in students. Its motto, “Si se puede” meaning “Yes, it can be done," reflects their commitment to making a positive impact.
Inspired by Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta’s fight for fair treatment of farmworkers, the motto also embodies the school’s dual-language program, where students learn in both English and Spanish.
The club began two years ago with simple "Kindness Cards" that were sent to spread messages of positivity throughout the local community.
The Kindness and Service Club has since expanded its efforts to include creating holiday cards for seniors and participating in various service projects.
These projects include donation drives for Teen Lifeline and Paz de Cristo Outreach Center.
The club also puts on a "Downtown Kindness Campaign" where students leave inspiring messages across Downtown Gilbert, further fostering a spirit of kindness within the community.
