One fireworks accident can change everything

Sara and her family experienced a fire July 5, 2023, that burned down their Gilbert home.

The cause: fireworks that had been set off the night before that were not properly disposed of.

Though they had been soaked in a bucket of cold water after use, these fireworks managed to ignite her garbage can, and the flames crept their way into the attic of her house.

Sara and her family managed to escape the fire unharmed, but one of their pets did not make it out of the house.

As a result, they were forced to relocate until their home is reconstructed to a livable condition.

Gilbert Fire and Rescue Department says this a somber reminder to take every extra precaution as this incident acts as a learning device to all community residents: just a few extra steps can make the difference between a fun-filled holiday celebration or a life-altering disaster.

Gilbert fire shares tips and precautions to make sure that fireworks are properly extinguished, in an effort to help the community avoid a misfortune:

• Soak used fireworks in a bucket of cool water for at least 24 hours;

• Wrap the soaked fireworks in plastic bags;

• Place the soaked, wrapped fireworks in your trash (not recycling) bin;

• Keep your trash bin out of your garage and at least 3 feet away from your home.

Fireworks 101

Non-aerial fireworks are permitted under state law for individuals to use on private property from June 24-July 6.

It's important to note that fireworks can only be used on private property with the owner's permission and are prohibited on all public property, including parks or public right-of-ways and roads.

Individuals using fireworks outside the dates allowed under state law are subject to a $1,000 fine.

Fireworks safety

If you are planning to use consumer fireworks, follow these safety tips:

• Adult supervision at all times;

• Avoid loose clothing;

• Only use fireworks outside on your own property and never near dry shrubs or grass;

• Do not shoot fireworks off in the middle of the street;

• Stand back! Always ensure there are several feet between the spectators and any fireworks;

• Keep a bucket of water close;

• Call 9-1-1 immediately if an injury or fire occurs.

Illegal fireworks

Residents can call the Gilbert Police Department ’s non-emergency line at 480-503-6500 to report the use of illegal consumer fireworks or fireworks used outside of the allowable dates .

The non-emergency number is recommended to ensure the 9-1-1 system is not overwhelmed.

Be considerate

Gilbert fire encourages residents to be considerate of their neighbors when using fireworks — don’t light them late at night and be aware that loud noises can be troubling to combat veterans and neighborhood pets.

Why does Gilbert allow fireworks?

State statute dictates that the town of Gilbert cannot prohibit the use of permissible consumer fireworks between May 4-6, June 24-July 6, and Dec. 24-Jan. 3.

Gilbert prohibits the use of consumer fireworks during all other times of the year.
