    With recent monsoon storms, Gilbert residents should consider cleaning their smoke detectors.

    An increase of dust and water vapor in the air can trigger the detector’s alarm. The Gilbert Fire & Rescue Department has a few easy steps that you can take to ensure that your smoke detector is working properly.

    • Remove smoke detector from the ceiling or wall;
    • Unplug the power cord;
    • Remove the batteries;
    • Gently spray the smoke detector with canned air;
    • Wipe smoke detector with rag;
    • Replace batteries;
    • Plug in power cord and replace smoke detector on the ceiling or wall.

    It is recommended that smoke dtectors be cleaned at least twice a year. Residents should test the battery once a month and replace it every year. The smoke detector device should be replaced every 10 years.
