The Arizona College Prep High School Speech and Debate team has won four State Championships in the past five years.

This year, it had eight individual state champions and qualified 18 students to compete in a national tournament, where it earned the prestigious School of Honor Award for finishing in the top 40 nationally.

The team was honored at the Aug. 7 Chandler Unified School District Governing Board meeting, with Superintendent Frank Narducci taking a photo with coach Norm Rumsey and the team.

One student, Divya Natarajan, scored 16th in the nation in the House Congressional Debate.

Rumsey spoke briefly, saying one of the core values of the team is “iron sharpens iron,” meaning everyone’s individual strengths help make others better.
