Cahill Calls for Audit on Iowa Veterans Home
State Auditor Rob Sand says his office will conduct an audit of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Sand says the audit comes at the request of State Representative Sue Cahill, a Democrat from Marshalltown. Cahill tells Sand the audit is needed after the unexpected layoffs in July of eleven full-time staff. She says these cuts were made without input from the Legislature and occurred despite the home receiving an additional one million dollars in state funding during the budget process.

Newton Library Roof Replacement Finished
The full roof replacement on the Newton Public Library is finished. Library Director Nicole Terry says she’s awaiting the final paperwork on the $772,000 project. Once that’s in, the Newton City Council can approve the final payment to Hopkins Roofing in Pella. The company was awarded the replacement contract in December 2022, and installed a standing seam metal roof. Terry notes the color of the massive new roof is exactly the same as the original.
Newton YMCA Working to Meet Local Child Care Needs
The Newton YMCA currently provides on-site childcare for over 150 children year round. Interim YMCA CEO Andy Karr says they could help many more parents if they had the space. “There is a huge need for childcare in Jasper County and all of central Iowa really. We have put a real effort into using all the extra space we have for childcare, to have more people take advantage of our program. As soon as we get the space, we fill it up. That need continues to be there.”
Tama County 4-H kicks off Clover Kids program for K-3rd graders
TOLEDO – Tama County 4-H is excited to announce that enrollment opens Sept. 1 for the 2024-2025 Clover Kids program, designed specifically for youth in grades K-3rd.
