    Survival Flatbread

In hard times, this recipe is a lifesaver for providing a quick and satisfying meal for your family. This flatbread can be cooked using any available means. While I personally used lard in my dough, it is not a requirement; feel free to use whatever fat you have on hand or leave it out entirely. The flatbread can be cooked to your preference, whether lightly browned or extra crispy. For added flavor, consider incorporating seasonings into the dough during preparation.

    Ingredients:

    • 2 1/2 cups of self-rising flour, plus additional for dusting
    • 1 tablespoon of fat (such as lard)
    • 3/4 to 1 cup of warm water

    Instructions:

In a bowl, combine 2 1/2 cups of self-rising flour with 1 tablespoon of fat. Use a pastry cutter or fork to incorporate the fat into the flour.

Gradually add warm water, starting with 3/4 cup and adjusting as needed. Mix the ingredients until just combined, being careful not to overwork the dough.

The dough should have a slightly drier consistency than biscuit dough. Allow it to rest for 30 minutes, covering it with a tea towel if desired.

Shape the dough into a ball and divide it into 10 equal segments. Roll each segment into a small ball.

Lightly dust your countertop with flour, and use a rolling pin to flatten each dough segment into a thin round. Alternatively, a tortilla press can be used for this step.

There are various methods for cooking the flatbread, including using a dry skillet, griddle, grill, campfire, or even a hot surface like a vehicle's engine manifold. Frying the flatbread is also an option.

Cook each piece of dough on your chosen surface for a few minutes on each side.

Repeat the cooking process for each dough segment.

    Serve and enjoy!
