The K-State Research & Extension Flint Hills District Board and staff extend a warm welcome to our new Family & Community Wellness Agent, Deb Andres, M.S., CFCS-HDFS. While not a stranger to the area, Andres began her new position at her primary office location in Council Grove on Monday, July 8 and has hit the ground running with all things related to Fair season!
Rodeo time in Junction City
( Photos by Anthony Gorges ) The Junction City Rodeo opened Friday night. There were events ranging from bull riding to the calf scramble. The rodeo continues Saturday evening at 7:30 at the arena on South Spring Valley Road. There is a Special Needs Rodeo from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday.
Hedwig Comes to the Grove
Davida Jones is a girl with many talents, and she was the perfect Homecoming Queen to have as the world was still emerging from the pandemic. On July 13, 2024, she took the stage at Cherry Grove Community House Theatre to deliver a rousing revival of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” much to the audience’s delight. Capturing all the drama, angst, and vivid imagery of the 2014 Tony Award-winning production, this performance was for one night only – but what a night it was. This production and many others this summer have been brought to you by the Arts Project of Cherry Grove. Bravo!
Oklahoma wing Jeff Nwankwo suffers torn achilles, out for extended period
A tough blow for the Oklahoma basketball roster just a few months before the start of the season. OU junior wing Jeff Nwankwo has suffered a torn achilles during summer workouts, a source confirmed to Sooners Illustrated on Sunday. The severe injury will sideline him for an extended period of time, but Oklahoma is still hopeful that he could possibly make it back by the end of this upcoming season. Nwankwo made the jump to the Sooners from the junior college ranks earlier this offseason, coming aboard from Cowley College in Kansas.

Economist: Economy weak across Midwest
Creighton University economist Ernie Goss told Hutch Post that his Rural Mainstreet survey is still showing weakness in the economy for this part of the country. "This is a survey of bank CEOs in rural areas of 10 states, including Kansas, right down the middle, mid-section of the country," Goss said. "The overall rating for July was not good. In fact, this is the lowest that we've recorded this year, and it's certainly down from this time last year. And what we're seeing is just the rural Main Street economy, driven a lot by agriculture and energy, just not holding up very well."
