GIRARD, Ohio (WKBN) — A Girard woman is celebrating 38 years of military service with a retirement dinner.

Wanda Elaine Mills served as a drill sergeant for 20 years and was responsible for training over 10,000 young men and women to be soldiers.

She spent a total of 38 years serving in the military and received 19 medals over the years. Mills was even featured on a recruitment poster in 2003.

Dozens of community members showed up Saturday to celebrate her retirement.

“It is amazing. I am so blessed being from Girard. This is pretty much our whole neighborhood I should say — and our family and friends,” Mills said.

Mills also extended special thanks to her family for supporting her journey.
