GLEN ROCK, NJ - The Glen Rock Dog Park recently held a special "Yappy Hour" event, organized by board member Alison Sandler, to honor the memory of the late Steve Liss, a cherished member of the park's community.
Steve, known as the "Mayor of the Dog Park," played an instrumental role in fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment, both for dogs and their owners.
Steve Liss, who tragically passed away recently, was remembered fondly by dozens of attendees, including his friends, family, and fellow dog park enthusiasts. Steve's wife, Janine, his son Mike and daughter-in-law Jessica, his grandson Little Steve, his father Mark and his wife Susan, Aunt Esther and his best friend Bob Engley, who worked with him for 30 years, were among those present.
Bob honored Steve by donating two red Adirondack chairs and a sign for "Steve’s Beach" in the pool area for the dogs. Additionally, Steve's neighbors, the Ortiz family, contributed a park bench in his memory.
Steve was an integral part of the dog park community. He initiated what became affectionately known as “The Morning Crew” and organized various events such as fishing outings for humans, trips to Wantage Dog Park, and beach outings at Ocean Grove for both dogs and their owners. His efforts ensured that everyone felt welcome, turning the dog park into a vibrant community hub.
The event was filled with touching tributes and heartfelt memories. Alison Sandler gave a moving speech, and attendees raised a glass in Steve’s honor.
Bolero Snort Brewery generously provided beverages for the occasion in support of the Ramapo Bergen Animal Shelter. Lisa Summers eloquently read her version of the ABC’s of what Steve meant to her, beautifully capturing his persona and the essence of his impact on the community.
Despite the hot summer temperatures, the dogs had a fantastic time, mirroring the joy and camaraderie that Steve fostered. The Glen Rock Dog Park has become a true community gathering place, fulfilling the vision of its founder, Michelle Hillock.
Steve Liss will be dearly missed, but his legacy of kindness, community spirit, and dedication to the park lives on. The informal memorial at Yappy Hour was a fitting tribute to a man who brought so much joy and togetherness to the Glen Rock Dog Park.
Steve Liss's contributions have left an indelible mark on the community, ensuring that the park remains a place where everyone feels welcome and valued.
