The Glen Rock Mill Inn seeks the community's help after power outages affect revenue

Table 1837, formerly known as the Glen Rock Mill Inn, is asking the community for help.

In the last two years, the restaurant has experienced a number of power outages that have lasted for multiple days. This month, the restaurant experienced its third power outage in less than eight months.

The prolonged outages have cost the restaurant revenue by forcing several, day-long closures, affecting customers, 30 employees, and connected hotel guests.

"These losses have taken a financial toll on our operation," the press release read.

Hufnagel said the restaurant does carry business loss insurance that would normally help with payroll losses. Due to the repeated claims in the last calendar year, however, deductible and insurance rates have nearly tripled for the business.

In the past, Hufnagel could provide an adjusted pay to hourly staff members so that they were not left short.

"This most recent time, unfortunately, left us high and dry losing both business and inventory so our employees went without hourly pay for the days we were closed. We’ve done our best to personally help out those who needed it," Hufnagel said in an email Tuesday afternoon.

The restaurant is now asking the community to help, through a gift card drive.

    Gift Card drive

In an attempt to raise money for the restaurant's recent financial losses, the gift card drive allows community members, patrons and more, to purchase $500 in gift cards, and in return receive an additional gift certificate for a 5-course dinner for two guests, valued at $175.

The additional gift certificates will become redeemable beginning in October of 2024 and will not have an expiration date. Guests can purchase gift cards through app.upserve.com/b/the-glen-rock-mill-inn/gift-card.

"Our regular guests and several others have really stepped up to help us and have understood the situation that we’re facing," Hufnagel said. Some of them were enjoying their dinner during one of the last three outages.

According to Hufnagel, the community response overall has been positive, as many of their neighbors understand the situation and have also suffered during these outages.

    Table 1837

Going on 40 years of dining history and hospitality at The Glen Rock Mill Inn, Hufnagel recently announced the restaurant's newest concept, Table 1837 at The Glen Rock Mill Inn.

The new dining concept features fine dining and classic cuisine with a modern outlook. Guests now have the chance to enjoy fine dining in a newly restored, relaxed and historic atmosphere while sampling their personal favorites as well as new ones.

With a 150-plus bottle wine list, the restaurant offers high quality selections from around the world with an additional full-service bar featuring a wide selection of curated cocktails and liquors, whiskey, bourbon, scotch and local craft brewed beers.

The restaurant offers an elegant dining atmosphere with a warm home-like feel, with linen-draped tables spaced across the dining room, surrounded by hand hewn beams, brick and stonework.

A more casual tavern room offers a full-service bar and cocktail style dining and stays open late to offer that perfect post dinner espresso, port wine, Scotch or nightcap before heading to your hotel suite at the Glen Rock Mill Inn.

"Our plan is to continue our operations creating a successful draw to the more rural areas and small towns of Southern York County by creating a 'destination' experience that offers our guests fine dining and country elegance all in one package," Hufnagel said.

The restoration was not only a way to restore the nearly 200-year-old building, but an opportunity to separate the restaurant from the hotel operation and to give the restaurant its own personality.

"We’re the oldest extant building in Glen Rock, and at the heart of town, we want to keep that heart beating."

"We hope in building and improving that destination that our guests will also frequent many of the other small shops and boutiques in Glen Rock, the surrounding areas, and the other Trail Towns communities that we’re a part of."
