The Glendale Ambassadors are celebrating three decades as the Helping Hands of the city.

The members of this non-profit volunteer community organization have a mission to enhance the economic, social, and cultural vitality of Glendale.

The Ambassadors began in 1994. They were founded by former Mayor Elaine Scruggs, whose vision was to create an all-volunteer citizens group to help bring awareness to Glendale.

The organization was the primary volunteer group for the beverage booths at Glendale’s festivals including Glendale Glitters, Glitter and Glow, the Chocolate Affaire, and the Glendale Jazz & Blues Festival.

Funds raised through the booths benefited many organizations throughout Arizona. The Ambassadors donated more than $353,000 to enhance youth sports, senior services, local theater, fire and police community services, parks and recreation activities, Glendale Summer Band and more.

The organization has an eight-member board of directors. The current president is Bud Zomok, a long-time resident and local business owner.

Several of the founding members of the organization serve on the board and continue the outreach and work of the ambassadors alongside the other active and dedicated members.

“Ambassador members participate in activities including the Glendale Adopt-a-Street Program, monthly membership meetings, holiday treats for First Responders, tours of historic sites and attractions throughout Glendale, and local community and nonprofit organization partnerships," said Bud Zomok.

A 30th Anniversary Committee was formed and is planning a year-long celebration including a Glendale Hometown Treasures event from 5:30 to 8 p.m., Sept. 24 at the GFWC Glendale Woman’s Club, 7032 N 56th Ave. The event will showcase a treasure in each district of the city including a treasure selected by  Elaine Scruggs.

The event will be emceed by local news anchor Jaime Cerreta. Seating is limited. Tickets are $40 per person and include a buffet dinner and dessert.

Residents and business owners are encouraged to join the Glendale Ambassadors. Membership is $25 annually.
