Rensselaer County gets High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area designation
New York officials say the designation will increase federal resources to battle the opioid crisis. Rensselaer County District Attorney, Mary Pat Donnelly, says the county applied for the designation also known as HIDTA. “We had a lot of support from our federal partners, law enforcement, Sheriff, Troy Police Department, and many of our legislators. But, unfortunately, the first two times the designations went elsewhere.” She says the third time was the charm and that it took a lot of work to get to that point. “We had to pull specific cases compared to different areas. Talk about basically the nexus between out-of-area trafficking.”
Upstate NY orchard makes Yelp list of top places to go apple picking in the U.S.
Head to Upstate New York, where yet another orchard has been honored as one of the best places to indulge in a treasured autumnal pastime. Indian Ladder Farms, a 108-year-old orchard just 30 minutes outside of Albany, has been named among the top 25 places to go apple picking in the U.S. by Yelp. The Altamont orchard was one of two New York farms to make Yelp’s list of apple-picking spots to “bookmark”; the other farm, Ochs Orchard in Warwick, is downstate near the New Jersey border.
Biggest Pumpkin in the Country Was Grown in New York State
It's officially pumpkin season in New York, and while most residents are looking to find a solid gourd to carve for Halloween, some farmers have a different goal in mind. Last weekend, Saratoga Giant PumpkinFest was held in Saratoga Springs, NY. The annual event brought together growers from across the country to see who could produce the largest pumpkin, and this year's competitors did not disappoint (below).
Fulton County cold case: Johnstown mom still missing after 16 years
This past Monday marked 16 years since a Johnstown mother, Kellisue Ackernecht, went missing after work. With little evidence other than Kellisue's husband's puzzling burning car, police said the night remains a mystery.
