Four Minneapolis beaches close due to elevated E. coli levels
MINNEAPOLIS — Four Minneapolis beaches are closed ahead of the holiday weekend due to high levels of dangerous bacteria.Lake Harriet North Beach, Lake Hiawatha Beach, Bde Maka Ska 32nd Street Beach and Bde Maka Ska North Beach are temporarily closed due to E. coli bacteria levels exceeding state guidelines, according to the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board.E. coli can cause stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting while enterococci bacteria can cause infections, such as UTIs.The park board says there have been no reports of illness from swimmers at the beaches so far.Bacteria levels tend to be higher after heavy rainfall.The beaches will re-open once bacteria levels fall within state guidelines.Click here for the latest beach water quality status.

Minneapolis launches first Narcan vending machine
Minneapolis is testing a new strategy to combat the opioid crisis: a Narcan vending machine. Mayor Jacob Frey and city staff unveiled the new machine in south Minneapolis at Fire Station 21 Wednesday. It’s designed like a regular vending machine, but it's stocked with a hundred boxes of naloxone, an opioid anti-overdose medication.

Last week, several youths from local organizations came together to participate in community service projects in Buffalo and the surrounding area. On Monday, June 24, a group of Wright County 4-H students and parents traveled to Sauk Centre where they worked alongside Buffalo FFA participants, and students enrolled in BHM summer programming through the Phoenix Learning Center, on a landscaping project at Eagle’s Healing Nest, an organization that works to meet the needs of veterans and service members who suffer from the effects of trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and addiction.

Crews work to stabilize Faribault dam damaged in flooding
FARIBAULT, Minn. — Crews in southern Minnesota are working to stabilize a dam damaged from recent flooding.The City of Faribault says the north side of the dam next to the Faribault Mill and south of Slevin Park is suffering from "flood-related erosion" on its north side.The full extent of the damage will not be determined until the water fully recedes.People are asked to avoid the area and not proceed beyond barricades and police tape within Slevin Park.City officials do not believe there is an immediate risk to the public.Crews will continue to monitor the situation.Last week, the Rapidan Dam south of Mankato experienced a partial failure due to flooding on the Blue Earth River. Erosion of a nearby embankment caused a family's home to collapse into the river. The iconic Rapidan Dam Store was also bought and demolished by Blue Earth County before it suffered the same fate.
