Stolen Car and Firearm Recovered
On July 4th , 2024, at 5:07 p.m., a resident on Kuehn Road near Coos Bay called the Coos County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center to report his vehicle and rifle stolen from his residence. A deputy responded, took the report, and entered the vehicle and weapon as stolen. An attempt to locate (ATL) was sent out county-wide. A short time later, an Oregon State Trooper located the stolen vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The suspect, Gregory J. Kuehne (54), was located inside the vehicle and detained by the Trooper. The investigating Deputy responded and recovered the stolen vehicle and rifle inside the vehicle. Mr. Kuehne was subsequently arrested on the charges of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Theft I, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. “Police action is not indicative of guilt. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”

The Shelly Wildfire in Klamath National Forest is expected to be a "long-duration fire" according to fire officials. Heat Warning Remains; ODA Shellfish Toxin Latest Report; Saturday Crash; Options for Cooling Down
The excessive heat warning remains in place for much of the area east of Florence. The National weather service says temperatures today in Mapleton will be at the 100 degree mark and will be in the mid 90s tomorrow, prompting the extension of the warning. Here along the coast temperatures are expected to get close to 80 degrees and decrease to the mid to low 70’s for tomorrow. The warmer temperatures did not dissuade gatherings for the fourth of July Celebrations. They continued over the weekend with another fireworks show at Siltcoos Lake with hundreds of people gathering for the event. Here in Florence the port parking lot and most of the street parking was taken up by individuals looking to escape the heat in Eugene where temperatures with around the 105 degree mark. Eugene will spend the next two days with over 100 degree temperatures.

Newspaper keeps going with digital transition, staying hyperlocal
The publisher of a weekly local newspaper based in McKenzie Bridge said the shift from print to digital has paid off. Ken Engelman has been with McKenzie River Reflections since it hit newsstands in 1978. He said three years before switching to mostly digital publication in August 2022, he collected email addresses from everyone he could, through events, direct mailings, and conversations.
ROSEBURG HAS RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR THIRD DAY
Roseburg had a record high temperature for the date Sunday, marking the third consecutive day with a record. Forecasters at the National Weather Service told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the mercury reached 106 degrees at the Roseburg Regional Airport. The record high for July 7th was 100 degrees set in 2010. Sunday was also the second hottest day of 2024, coming in just a degree shy of the 107 degrees reported on Saturday.
WOMAN TAKEN TO HOSPITAL AFTER APPARENT RV EXPLOSION
A Tenmile woman was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries after an apparent RV explosion early Saturday. A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said at approximately 1:10 a.m. dispatch was notified of an RV fire near a pullout on Olalla Road in the Tenmile area. Deputies and fire crews responded to the scene.

Former Colorado QB Drew Carter to continue college basketball career at Oregon
Former Colorado football quarterback Drew Carter isn’t giving up on his college basketball career just yet. After spending last season hooping at UC Davis, Carter announced via Instagram on Friday his commitment to the Oregon Ducks men’s basketball program. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Oregon native will join head coach Dana Altman’s team as a walk-on guard, according to Ducks Digest. At UC Davis this past winter, Carter saw 22 total minutes of action across nine games played. He finished the year with 11 total points, including six in UC Davis’ season opener against Jessup. Carter spent two seasons with the Buffs as a backup QB, appearing in nine total games before entering the transfer portal in April 2023. Colorado men’s basketball head coach Tad Boyle welcomed Carter on as a walk-on during the 2021-22 session, although he never saw game action.
