    Ford Edge, Escape or Explorer

Chris Pyle, JustAnswer ‘s auto expert, shared that because seniors are, well, a bit older, their bodies might not want a rough and tumble experience when it comes to their cars. For this reason, he likes these American-made cars.

His Ford picks? “The Ford Edge, Escape and Explorer would be a good fit for each of the previously mentioned concerns,” he said. “If you get a high-end model, it can come with a lot of features an older person may find helpful, like heated seats and steering wheel, parking aid, lane keeping assist, auto lamps, massaging seats and navigation.”

Kia Sorento or Hyundai Palisade or Santa Fe

Pyle’s offered more suggestions for the budget-conscious retiree: Kia Sorento and Hyundai Palisade or Santa Fe.

He said they have all the same features as the Ford cars, but somewhat lack in comfort by comparison.

“However, they are very well-built cars that visit the shop for repairs much less,” he said. “So, you sacrifice some comfort but retain some of your cash on repairs. When repairs are needed, they are not very expensive.”

Sounds like a fair shake — after all, you can always add a comfy cushion, but you can’t add reliability!

    Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V

Want a car that’ll outlast your favorite pair of slippers? Pyle’s got you covered: Toyota RAV4 and Honda CRV are longevity champs.

“You are old, and it is time to have fewer things on your plate,” he said. “Buy one of these, and it likely will be your last car needed, since both are known for lasting a long while. Plus, they rank way up there in miles per gallon (MPG). So, you get to spend less time pumping gas and [more time] enjoying your freedom behind the wheel.”

Less time at the pump means more time for pickleball, right?

    Honda Fit

Evaldas Zabitis, an automotive expert at carVertical , chimed in with this compact wonder.

“The Honda Fit is a unique proposition in the used car market,” he said. “It’s the same size as the hatchback but roomier and more practical than similar models. Furthermore, it’s a Honda, meaning it will be totally reliable and fuel-efficient — qualities that are very important for retirees living on Social Security.”

    Mitsubishi Mirage

Zabitis offered a tip for the super budget-conscious: “The Mirage is one of a kind. Even when it was brand new, it was one of the most affordable cars on the market, but buying it used offers even better value.

“Small cars never hold their value, meaning 2025 will be the right time to buy a used Mirage. With a sensible $3,000 to $5,000 budget, you can find a decent 6- to 7-year-old model. It’s extremely good value.”

    Nissan Leaf

For the eco-warrior retiree, Zabitis likes the Nissan Leaf. He said it’s a “reliable, no-nonsense” car that’s perfect for short trips around town or visiting a local mall.

Plus, because of its limited range, it doesn’t have the same competition from other buyers, who want their electric cars to go farther. Because of this, Zabitis said the price on the Leaf will “stay low and affordable.”

Save on gas and save the planet — talk about a win-win.

    Mazda 3

Here’s a little secret from Zabitis: “Mazda’s offerings are like well-kept secrets.”

He added, “This is especially true for the Mazda 3, which is available in hatchback or sedan forms. Moreover, the Mazda 3 is remarkably trouble-free and inexpensive to buy and maintain. It’s almost the perfect car.”

    Scion xA

Don’t let the brand’s demise fool you, said Zabitis. “Toyota’s youthful brand was defunct a while ago, but it doesn’t mean everyone should ignore their cars.”

Zabitis said the Scion xA is essentially the Toyota Yaris with different body panels but a roomier interior, more comfortable suspension and a lower price. “It’s definitely one of those cars everyone should consider if they have a tight budget.”
