Most coins from the 1980s are still worth just their face value. There are so many coins from that decade that are still in circulation and have no additional value to collectors. There are some 1980s coins, however, that are worth significantly more than their denomination would indicate.

These coins are more valuable because they are rarer. If they have errors, however, they may be worth a significant sum. Errors can include double stuck coins, which show a ‘shadow’ effect due to minute movement of the coin prior to the second strike, or brockage, where one side of the coin has a mirror image of the other side, rather than the correct image.

    1980 Double Struck Jefferson Nickel

There are a number of 1980 Jefferson nickels that were double-struck to varying degrees. Some were circulated, as the double strike is barely noticeable to the untrained eye. These can sell for around $20 to a collector.

An uncirculated 1980 Double Struck Jefferson Nickel is currently for sale on eBay for $1,050. It is significantly off-center, making it even more valuable.

1982-D Small Date Copper Alloy Lincoln Penny

Pennies minted before 1982 are 95% copper. In the middle of 1982, the U.S. Mint changed the planchets (the blank disk from which the coin is made) from striking copper-alloy to copper-plated zinc for cost reasons. However, it was difficult to strike the new planchets with the old dies, so they modified the dies. The coins that were made from the new planchets using the old dies were rare and, therefore, became valuable. In 2016, the first of these coins to be identified sold for $18,800 at auction. A second was identified in 2019, but it’s unclear if any more exist.

    1983 Double-Die Reverse Lincoln Penny

In 1983, a small number of Lincoln pennies were made without a mint mark and with a double die – an image on the reverse side (back) of the coin that looks as though it were struck twice. About 5,000 pennies were made with this error, and one of them sold at auction in 2017 for $7,050.

    1983 Roosevelt Dime

About 2,500 1983 dimes were struck with no mint mark and sold in proof sets, which are collectible sets of all the coins issued in a given year. According to Professional Coin Grading Services (PCGS), about 1,000 of these are known to still exist.

    1984 Lincoln Double-Die Penny

An estimated several thousand Lincoln pennies were struck in 1984 with a double die error on the obverse (front) side of the coin. You’ll need to look carefully to see if that penny you got in your change from the grocery store is one of these rare finds. If you look carefully at Lincoln’s ear, beard, and bowtie, you should be able to tell if it’s a double-die coin. If you find one, it could be worth about $170.

1989 Washington Quarter Design Stamped on a Lincoln Cent Planchet

This coin is the size and makeup of a penny, but the design stamped on it is a quarter. It was made when a Lincoln penny planchet was struck on a Washington quarter die. This type of error is rare, making this coin more valuable. This coin sold for over $2,200 at auction.

The value of these coins shows that collectors will pay quite a bit of money for coins that are not exceptionally old but may be rare. It may be worthwhile to go through that coin jar to see if you might have one of these valuable coins.
