When people think of classic cars, they often think of vehicles made before the 2000s. But even newer vehicles can eventually become classics. Some of these cars can even become worth a lot of money , especially if they’re kept in prime condition.
GOBankingRates spoke with a few automotive experts to find out which car models they think will become valuable classics in the future. While there are no guarantees and you should always do your due diligence when purchasing a vehicle, here’s what they predict .
Joe Giranda, the director of sales and marketing at CFR Classic , said the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 will probably become a valuable classic in the next 10 years. These are well-made muscle cars that have a sporty aesthetic and powerful performance. The 2020 model has a 5.2-liter V-8 engine and 526 horsepower.
“In my opinion, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 is a strong contender for future classic status,” said Giranda. “[It] stands out due to its high-revving V8 engine, track-focused performance and the Shelby heritage, which adds a layer of historical significance.”
The GT350, Giranda continued, had relatively limited production numbers, which could add to its future classic status — and increase its value. It’s popular amongst car enthusiasts.
By no means is the 2020 Toyota GR Supra the newest model of this car — there’s a 2025 version as well. But Geoff Cudd, consumer advocate and owner of Find The Best Car Price , believes that any of these vehicles — from 2020 on — could become a collector’s item.
In particular, he said that the 2020 could become an expensive to buy classic. This particular model has a powerful turbocharged six-cylinder engine and 335 horsepower. It’s an automatic with eight speeds, rear-wheel drive and the ability to go from zero to 60 miles per hour (mph) in 3.8 seconds.
“The Toyota Supra […] combines a rich heritage with modern engineering, making it a future classic,” said Cudd.
Giranda also predicts that the Porsche 911 will become a class — especially the 991.2 GT3 and GT3 RS models.
“These models epitomize Porsche’s engineering excellence, combining exceptional performance with a timeless design,” he said.
The 2022 model comes with a 4.0-liter flat-six engine that can achieve up to 502 horsepower. It can also reach 9000 revolutions per minute (rpm) and goes from zero to 60 in 2.7 seconds (automatic version).
Quite simply, Porsche is also a recognizable name, one that’s already got a high starting price and is frequently in demand. It’s not hard to see why either.
“I think the Porsche 911, particularly the 991.2 GT3 and GT3 RS variants, will be highly sought after in the future,” said Giranda. “The naturally aspirated engines in these cars are becoming rarer in the era of turbocharging, which enhances their appeal.”
The driving experience, he added, could add to the overall value and desirability of owning one of these cars.
The Tesla Model S is another vehicle that could be on the path to “classic” status. If kept in good condition, it could also become highly valued in the future.
A big reason why these cars may achieve classic status is simply because they use groundbreaking technology. That combined with their significance in the automotive industry definitely plays a role.
“As the first mass-market electric vehicle to offer significant range and performance, the Model S represents a pivotal moment in automotive history,” said Giranda.
He went on to say that the earlier models may be considered more collectible than the newer ones — as often tends to be the case with classics. He added that the P85D and P100D are especially likely to rise in value.
The 2024 model can run about 405 miles on a single charge. It can also reach 60 mph in about 2.4 seconds or less.
