Consumer Reports recently analyzed whether — in terms of cost versus longevity — it ever pays to buy used appliances to save money .

It turns out that it can, but you have to be careful and diligent.

The consumer advocacy and information nonprofit wrote, “Avoid most online marketplaces, calculate what useful life an appliance may have left, and opt for reliable brands. And if you’re looking for something specific, check used appliance stores often — you can save as much as 75 percent off your dream appliance by doing so.”

GOBankingRates spoke with experts who explained what affordable used appliances will last the longest and save you the most .

Money mistakes the super wealthy never make - that you might be doing now.

    Washers and Dryers

Laundry machines are among your home’s most essential and frequently used appliances. Unfortunately, when their inevitable death arrives, they’re also among the most expensive to replace — but the right used models can save the day with incredible value and enduring longevity.

“Brands like Maytag, Whirlpool and GE build washers and dryers to last 15 to 20 years with proper care,” said Colin Matei, owner and president of Clean Air Heating & Cooling (formerly Clean Air Comfort Systems). “I’ve found five- to seven-year-old models of these brands in great working order for 50% to 70% off retail, saving many customers $500 to $1,500.”

Consumer Reports said most modern dryers should last for 13 years and washing machines should last for five to 15 years.

Water Heaters, Furnaces and Air Conditioners

If it regulates the temperature of your home or your water, a good used model might be a wise investment.

“I’ve found certain appliances like water heaters, furnaces and air conditioners often have years of life left when purchased secondhand,” said Courtney Zalesak, a 15-year veteran of the HVAC and plumbing industry and founder of Texas-based Malek Service Company . “Brands such as Rheem, Trane and Lennox are built to high standards and last 15 to 25 years. Buying a five- to 10-year-old model could save 40% to 60% off retail while providing an additional five to 15 years of service with regular maintenance.”

That assessment closely matches Matei’s experience.

“Basic models from Rheem or Bradford White can run efficiently for eight to 12 years,” he said. “We recently installed a three-year-old Rheem for a client, saving them over $500. With annual maintenance, it should provide hot water for another decade.”

    Ovens and Ranges

The Consumer Reports analysis found that you’re probably better off buying new if you’re replacing a microwave or dishwasher because there are so many reliable but affordable models on the market — but the same does not go for the two appliances that do most of the heavy lifting in the kitchen.

“Stoves and ovens also have excellent lifespans if they’re high quality,” Matei said. “We service many ovens 10 to 15 years old that are still baking like new.”

Here, too, he and Zalesak are on the same page.

“GE and Whirlpool build appliances to last at least 10 to 15 years,” Zalesak said. “Buying a model that’s a few years old and in good condition could save 30% to 50% while providing several years of service with care and repair if needed.”

Consumer Reports said gas ranges typically last a little longer than electric ranges — about 15 to 17 years for the former compared with roughly 13 to 15 years for the latter.

Brands Matter, but Nothing Is More Crucial Than Professional Advice

Matei supported the Consumer Reports recommendation to stick with well-known manufacturers with long track records of making good products and a reputation for excellent customer support.

“Always test used appliances and choose a reputable brand and model for the best value,” he said.

However, the most important thing is to know what you don’t know and never to roll the dice on a used appliance whose inner workings you haven’t mastered. Just as you wouldn’t buy a used car without having a mechanic inspect it first, don’t buy a used appliance without a professional giving it a thorough once-over.

“An experienced technician can spot a lemon and find an appliance with years of life left to save big on energy costs and the environment,” Matei said.
