One of the benefits of crafting is having the ability to customize your creation to your tastes or décor; think painting the picture frames in your bedroom to coordinate with your light lavender walls.

And maybe the biggest benefit of all in crafting is saving money . No need to drop $15 on that custom-colored picture frame when you can buy a basic frame and paint it yourself with a few dabs of from your leftover gallon of wall paint.

While you can find many crafting supplies you need at Walmart, for example, stop by your local Dollar Tree to see what’s on the shelves before filling your cart at a big-box store. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by what you can find at Dollar Tree for cheaper prices than at Walmart. Here are five items to start with to build your stock of craft supplies.

Money mistakes the super wealthy never make - that you might be doing now.

    Yarn

You’re not knitting sweaters for the family, so you don’t need skeins and skeins of yarn. Instead, you need just enough to top your homemade rag doll with a shock of red yarn for hair. Dollar Tree sells 132 yards of acrylic-polyester yard for $1.25; Walmart’s skeins are double the size, but double the price. Dollar Tree is the best bet if you need only a small amount.

    Paintbrushes

Let’s go back to that picture frame for your lavender room. You found an old wooden frame around the house that you want to refinish, and Dollar Tree has just the foam paintbrushes you’ll need. Grab a pack of six for $1.25. Walmart charges about a quarter more for a smaller quantity.

    Wood and Metal Crafts

Kids love all things personalized, don’t they? Set the tone for their bedrooms by creating a custom name plaque for their doors, a rope holding a plywood vertical plaque similar in size to a hotel’s “do not disturb sign.” Kids can take your leftover paints, brushes and bright stickers to decorate their signs, priced at just $1.25 at Dollar Tree. The discount retailer has plenty of wood, metal signs and other items to decorate.

    Watercolor Paper

Learning to dabble in watercolors? No need to spend lots of cash on paper created for watercolors when you’re still in the trial-and-error stage of the craft. Dollar Tree sells a 24-count pad of 8-inch by 10-inch sheets for $3. A similar pad ideal for beginners costs more than $1 more at Walmart.

    Basic Supplies

Hard-core crafters have supplies galore in the drawers of their craft carts, and it’s a sure bet they could have found a lot of those staples at Dollar Tree. What crafter doesn’t have a stock of glitter glue, resin and hardener, residue eraser, craft clamps, decorative sand, cork sheets, hot glue gun sticks and pads, and knitting needles? A $20 bill at Dollar Tree will last longer for supplies than at Walmart.
