The name Tesla brings to mind many things when it comes to cars – and one of those things is “expensive electric car.” But what if you want a car that’s like a Tesla without the big price tag ? Or one with a similar price tag that’s comparable in quality? Good news: There are less expensive options for you. (And some that are around the same price, but are great if you’re looking to get away from the Tesla brand.)

GOBankingRates spoke to automotive experts to find out the EV alternatives that are not Tesla but are still worth considering. Here are six car models that are comparable to Tesla .

Money mistakes the super wealthy never make - that you might be doing now.

    Mustang Mach-E

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is proving you can teach an old horse new (electric) tricks. Chris Pyle, a JustAnswer auto expert, said it’s a “decent price and range – 320 miles.” But he thinks it’s not as big as it could be because of one reason: “I think what is killing this car’s popularity is using the Mustang name. I think they should have come up with a new name.”

Aivaras Grigelecius from carVertical disagreed, saying the Mach-E “successfully captured the spirit of the combustion-engine Mustang to create a dynamic and engaging electric SUV.” He added, “Some may be impressed by the Tesla’s software capabilities, while others might find the Mustang Mach-E’s build quality to be a deciding factor.”

So, if you want a car that says, “I’m eco-friendly, but I could still theoretically do donuts in a parking lot,” this might be your ride.

    Kia EV6 and EV9

Grigelecius described the Kia EV6 as “one of the most striking-looking electric vehicles on sale. It’s neither a traditional sedan nor a typical SUV, but rather a mix of both.”

Pyle was equally impressed, saying, “This is my pick for one of the best-designed EVs. Kia has been getting better and better each year with the interior and driveline. They nailed it with the EV9.”

Grigelecius added, “Unlike Tesla, which tries to reinvent almost everything, the EV6 keeps things simple and user-friendly. A door handle is just a door handle. Every imaginable function is not hidden in the touchscreen.”

So if you’re tired of navigating Tesla’s complex touchscreen, the EV6 or EV9 (depending on how much space you need) might be your new best friend.

    Lucid Air

If you have champagne tastes and a Tesla budget, there’s the Lucid Air. Grigelecius really likes this car, saying, “The Lucid Air offers better handling balance, luxury and interior space than the Model S. Moreover, Lucid Air can go further at a single charge.”

He added, “Although the Lucid Air is a bit more expensive, [its] price difference is justified by a far superior product in nearly every measurable metric.”

In other words, if you want to a fancier EV and can afford it, the LucidAir is the way to go.

    Polestar 2

The Polestar 2 is like the cool Scandinavian exchange student of electric cars. Pyle highlighted the 320-mile range, but said since it’s a new company, servicing might be a hassle and there are “some kinks that likely need to be worked out.”

Grigelecius added, “In many ways, the Polestar 2 is more traditional. It looks, operates and handles like a conventional car, making it more convenient and easier to live with.”

Andrew Franks, co-founder of Claimsline , chimed in: “The vehicle itself, especially with the Performance Pack, is likely to be more appealing to those who are on the lookout for a blend of comfort and sportiness.”

    Volkswagen ID.7

Volkswagen’s throwing its hat into the ring with the ID.7. Franks noted, “Supported by the 77-kWh (kilowatt-hour) battery pack, the new Volkswagen ID.7 comes with a maximum range of 380-plus miles, which is impressive as far as EVs are concerned and even gives tussles to Tesla’s range.”

He continued, “The use of technology, like augmented reality head-up display and IDA voice assistant showcases how far Volkswagen is going with regards to evolution.”

Overall, if you want to feel like you’re in a sci-fi movie but with German engineering, the ID.7 might be your ticket to the future.

    BMW i4

BMW isn’t about to let Tesla hog all the spotlight. Franks raved about the i4 M50: “This car is at par with the Tesla Model 3. The i4 is especially favored by people who love BMW’s sporty nature as well as the luxury aspect.”

He added, “Although their prices are about the same as those of Tesla’s products, some might find the traditional BMW experience combined with electric driving to be worth any price differences.”

Basically, it’s a high-end EV driving experience from a trusted brand and for many, that makes it worth it.
