If you’re looking for an affordable hotel right on the beach that’s close to dining and shopping, stay two weeknights at the Best Western Plus Ocean View Resort for $273 with taxes and fees. The hotel, which is rated “Very Good” by Expedia users, features a bar and a cafe. The room also has a microwave and a refrigerator if you want to save money on meals.

Free things to do include the Public Art Walking Tour and the Historical Walking Tour. You can get more information on these self-guided tours at the town’s Visitor Information Center.

    Oxnard, California

Oxnard describes itself as “California’s best kept secret.” It’s located halfway between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

Maya Kapoor-Miller, travel manager at Dreamport , recommended Oxnard as an affordable offseason destination for retirees. She said even though it can get busy and expensive during the summer months, fall is a great time to visit. In October and November, expect average daily temperature highs of 66 to 73 degrees and lows between 49 and 58.

Kapoor-Miller said that Oxnard has miles of beautiful golden beaches like Mandalay Beach, along with historic Victorian-era architecture. She explained that the harbor is perfect for kayaking or cycling and serves as the main access point to Channel Islands National Park, where you can explore diverse marine life in a protected environment. She recommended either renting a kayak for the afternoon or exploring the park’s five islands on foot.

“Compared to other Californian beach towns, it offers a lower cost of living, making it an attractive vacation spot for retirees on a fixed income,” she said. “Everything from dining out to entertainment is more affordable, especially during the offseason, without compromising on quality.”

You can stay two weeknights in the Hilton Garden Inn in Oxnard for $347 total . Or if you want breakfast included with your stay, book two weeknights at the Homewood Suites by Hilton for $404 total.

    Coos Bay, Oregon

Coos Bay is a key deep-water port between San Francisco and Puget Sound, making it a central part of the Southern Oregon Coast. Expect highs of 54 to 65 degrees and lows of 42 to 49 in October and November.

The town offers plenty of free or low-cost activities. You can spend the day in the Marshfield District that offers historic buildings, theaters, shops, art galleries and parks. Or, if you’re into outdoor activities, Coos Bay offers easy access to the Southern Oregon Coastal Wilderness. Explore the Oregon Dunes, walk along long stretches of beach or hike through the woods. And with rivers, lakes and the Pacific Ocean close by, water activities are also an option.

For $310 total, you can stay two weeknights in a luxury cabin at Bay Point Landing , which is a beachfront aparthotel. The kitchenette with stovetop and microwave make preparing simple meals easy if you’re looking to eat on a budget. If a hotel is your preferred accommodation, there are several affordable options, including Edgewater Inn and Suites or Quality Inn and Suites at Coos Bay, both for under $275 total.
