7 Japanese Cars That Will Have Massive Price Increases in October 2024

The autumn months can be an excellent time to buy a car , as many dealers slash prices to offload old inventory and free up space for new models. That said, buyers who have their hearts set on a well-engineered Japanese model may be disappointed, as many of these are so popular that dealers can’t keep them on the lot. The result? Many popular Japanese cars are selling above sticker price.
The Nissan GT-R already received a price hike exceeding $4,000 when the 2024 model hit the lots this Spring. Starting at $120,990, this model could easily experience a price hike as we close out the year, in part because Nissan plans to retire it.
Nissan’s three-row SUV saw a $4,750 price hike this year after the manufacturer stopped offering the entry-level S trim, pushing the starting price for owning a model from $52,595 to $57,345. That said, the Armada remains one of the more affordable large SUVs on the market.
Brian Moody, executive editor for Kelley Blue Book, notes that Nissan has a lot of affordable options beyond the Armada.
“Nissan has six models with a base price under $30,000, including a new compact SUV,” he says, referring to the all-new Nissan Kicks .
2024 Toyota Land Cruiser
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser was one of the most popular (and fastest-selling) cars last month, according to CarEdge . What that means is that negotiating with dealers on the price — starting at $57,345 for a base model — is a difficult task. Worse, the popularity of the model has many dealers jacking up the price, sometimes by as much as $20,000 .
Moody says there’s no reason to settle for price gouging, as popular models like the Toyota Rav4 are listing for less than $46,000.
2024 Honda Civic Type R and 2025 Honda Hatchback
Many of the more affordable Japanese models have seen some of the steepest price hikes this year. That’s particularly true of the line of Honda Civics, which have always been the more economical cars on the market. The 2024 Honda Civic Type R, for example, saw a $1,900 increase over the 2023 model, bringing the base price up to $44.795, before the mandatory $1,095 destination fee. The 2025 model is increasing an extra $800, making this once-affordable car less so.
Honda abandoned the entry-level LX-trim for its Honda Hatchback, pushing the price of the 2025 model up $2,500 to $27,450 .That the 2024 Hatchback is one of the most popular models on the dealer’s lot, with low inventory, means buyers can expect a mark-up.
2024 Subaru BRZ
The Subaru BRZ is another cheap car that’s gone up in price. That said, with minimal changes between the 2023 and 2024 models, there’s little to justify the $950 price increase .
2025 Toyota GR Supra
For 2025, Toyota dropped the four-cylinder option for its classic sports car model , hiking the cost of entry up 20% over last year to a starting price of $57,345.
