Public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae. A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep pets away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. If you, or your pets, come into contact with algae rinse the area with clean, fresh water. Suspected HAB-related health incidents, whether human or animal, regardless of season, should be reported at kdhe.ks.gov/1163.
Shooting behind KCK fire station leaves one dead, three in custody
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - One man has died as the result of a shooting in a Kansas City, Kansas, park after he was found behind a fire station over the weekend. The Wyandotte County, Kansas, Sheriff’s Office says that just after 6:25 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, emergency crews were called to Kansas City’s Klamm Park at 2515 N. 27th St. with reports of a shooting.

Walk-In Enrollment, Back to School Fair Tuesday
Walk-in enrollment at Salina Public Schools is scheduled for this week, along with the Saline County Back to School Fair. While online enrollment has been going on for a couple of weeks, those who would prefer to enroll in person can do so on Tuesday. Walk-in enrollment will be located at Central High School, 650 E. Crawford. The event will take place on Tuesday, July 23, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Kansas City student lunch debt has only gotten worse in the years after a free meal program ended
Students in the Kansas City area have racked up thousands of dollars in school lunch debt since universal free lunch ended two years ago. Med-Dazzling: GBHS students earn recognition for medical innovation
More than 12,000 students aspiring for careers in healthcare from around the world converged in Houston, Texas on June 26-29 for the HOSA Future Health Professionals International Leadership Conference. Six Great Bend High School students qualified for the international competition, and five students attended. Seniors Eliana Teri and Cailyn Murphy placed eighth out of 88 teams competing in the medical innovation category. Sophomore Cara Murphy was also part of the team but could not attend the international conference.
