As Memorial Day weekend approaches, Madera County officials are urging residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution around the county’s beautiful yet potentially dangerous waterways. With warm temperatures enticing many to enjoy outdoor recreation, the county emphasizes the hidden risks associated with local creeks and waterways, including slippery rocks, fast-moving currents, and dangerously cold water temperatures.

To ensure safety, Madera County has issued several key guidelines for those planning to spend time near water:

    1. Wear a Properly Fitting Life Jacket: Always wear a life jacket that fits properly to increase safety in case of accidental immersion in water.
    2. Closely Supervise Children: Children should never be left unsupervised near water, as the dangers can be sudden and severe.
    3. Stay Hydrated: Maintain hydration to ensure you can stay alert and respond quickly to any situation.
    4. Monitor Conditions: Continuously monitor the water conditions, which can change rapidly and unexpectedly.

“Though the temperatures are inviting, the risks associated with our waterways are very real,” county officials warned. “Rocks can be slippery, the water deceptively fast, and temperatures can be deadly cold.”

The county also reminds everyone that help is always just a call away. For non-emergencies, assistance can be reached at (559) 675-7770. In case of emergencies, dialing 9-1-1 remains the fastest way to get help.
