The culinary world mourns the loss of Raul Porto Sr., the visionary founder of Porto’s Bakery, who passed away at the age of 92 on Wednesday, as announced by the company on Instagram Friday.

Described as an extraordinary man, Raul Sr., alongside his wife Rosa, laid the foundation for Porto’s Bakery from the confines of their home kitchen. Initially, they sold cakes and pastries to friends and family, with Raul Sr. often lending a hand after hours while still employed at another local bakery. Eventually, he made the leap to join Rosa full-time, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to the growth of their business.

In 1976, the first official Porto’s Bakery storefront opened its doors in Echo Park, marking the beginning of an iconic journey in the heart of Los Angeles. Over the years, Porto’s Bakery has blossomed into one of the city's most beloved bakery establishments, capturing the hearts and taste buds of locals and visitors alike.

With locations spanning across Glendale, Burbank, Downey, Buena Park, West Covina, and Northridge, Porto’s Bakery has left an indelible mark on the culinary landscape of L.A., becoming a cherished destination for delectable treats and warm memories.
