Motorists who travel between Stockton and Sacramento on Interstate 5 will soon experience significant changes as a $123 million improvement project gets underway. According to Caltrans, the "I-5 Anchor Pavement Rehabilitation and Improvement Project" is set to begin the week of June 7, impacting over 30 miles of roadway from Hammer Lane in Stockton to the San Joaquin/Sacramento County line.

The ambitious project will see extensive upgrades to the existing pavement and shoulders along this heavily trafficked corridor, which accommodates over 100,000 vehicles daily. The improvements aim to enhance driving conditions and safety for all users of this critical transportation route.

Funded largely by federal contributions, the project includes $111 million from federal sources and an additional $12 million from the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017. This significant investment underscores the importance of maintaining and upgrading vital infrastructure to meet current and future demands.

In addition to the pavement and shoulder enhancements, the project will also focus on replacing on- and off-ramps with upgraded concrete at several key locations, including Eight Mile Road, State Route 12, Turner Road, Peltier Road, and Thornton Road/Walnut Grove Road. These upgrades are expected to provide a more durable and reliable road surface, improving the overall driving experience.

Caltrans has warned drivers to prepare for numerous lane shifts and road closures as work progresses. These disruptions are necessary to ensure the safety of both the construction crews and the traveling public. Motorists are encouraged to stay informed about the latest road conditions and plan their travel accordingly to minimize inconvenience.
