As residents gear up for a long weekend outdoors, the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito is encouraging the community to become "ocean heroes" by enjoying wildlife responsibly. The Center has shared crucial tips to ensure that both people and animals can safely enjoy the natural beauty of the coast.

    Keep Your Distance
"Always stay behind ropes and signage," advises the Center. Maintaining a respectful distance is key to preventing disturbances to wildlife. If an animal reacts to your presence, such as lifting its head and looking around, it’s a clear sign that you should move farther away.

    Leash Your Pets
For those bringing along their furry friends, the Center stresses the importance of keeping pets leashed. "Keep your fur babies and wildlife safe - keep them separate," they remind pet owners. This simple step can prevent unwanted encounters and ensure the safety of both pets and wild animals.

    Use Your Zoom
When it comes to capturing the perfect photo, the Marine Mammal Center recommends using the zoom function on your camera. This allows for memorable wildlife photography without causing stress to the animals.

    Call the Hotline
In case of any wildlife emergencies or concerns, the Center urges people to call their rescue hotline at 415-289-SEAL (7325). "Save it in your phone now!" they encourage, so that you’re prepared to act quickly if needed.

    Watch What You Like
Finally, the Center advises being mindful of the content you engage with on social media. "Be careful what posts, photos and videos you like and share to avoid boosting bad behavior," they caution. Supporting responsible wildlife viewing and sharing positive, respectful interactions can help promote better practices among the wider community.
