United Airlines is making significant changes to its Basic Economy fare policies, according to The Points Guy. Starting August 6, Basic Economy passengers will be allowed to check in online and via airport kiosks, provided they are not bringing a carry-on bag. This update aims to streamline the boarding process and reduce wait times at the airport.

Previously, Basic Economy passengers had to wait in line to have their carry-on bag status verified before receiving a boarding pass. With the new policy, passengers who agree not to bring a carry-on bag can check in digitally, bypassing this verification step.

However, United Airlines will impose a $65 fee if passengers attempt to sneak a carry-on bag onto the plane, a charge aligned with their standard carry-on baggage fee. This measure is intended to discourage passengers from bypassing the rules and to ensure compliance with the airline's baggage policies.

While American and Delta Airlines offer carry-on bags for Basic Economy passengers, United will continue to restrict this benefit unless passengers have Premier status, Star Alliance Gold status, or possess certain United credit cards.
