The Caltrain Board of Directors has approved a significant fare reduction for youth riders, effective Sunday, September 1. Youth can now purchase a $1 All Zone One-way fare through all payment methods, and a $2 All Zone Day Pass via Caltrain Mobile or ticket vending machines. Once the Clipper Next Generation launches in 2025, a $24 All Zone Monthly pass will be available for Youth Clipper Card holders.

The decision follows the success of a September 2023 promotion, which saw a 43% increase in Clipper youth ticket sales, compared to an 18% overall ticket sales increase. Caltrain Executive Director Michelle Bouchard emphasized the importance of fostering public transit habits early, stating, "Now young people can get up and down the peninsula with ease for less than the cost of a boba tea."

Caltrain aims to boost ridership further with this fare change, building on a 19% increase in average weekday ridership in June 2024 compared to the previous year. Additionally, Caltrain has launched a Youth Rider Electric Train Contest, encouraging riders aged 18 and under to submit videos or essays about their excitement for the upcoming electrified service. Submissions are due by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, August 6.

That's probably good. It can't support itself anyway.
